Are you growing asparagus plants? You might want to check on them. After the last two hot days, one lone asparagus plant in my yard shot out of the ground. I swear it was not there yesterday. It's about two millimeters wide and a foot and a half tall. When they are this small, it's best to let them turn into an asaparagus fern. I need more asparagus plants. The lonely little asparagus is pretty funny, though.

Yay! I was really hoping to start some this year, but I think it's a little late now. Maybe next year. How exciting to discover those shoots! Do you get a decent yield from your patch?
Chelsea, I moved my asparagus "patch" from my old house and this is the only one that survived. The patch was not planted in a good spot and needs a LOT more moisture and organic matter. Yeon and I are going to get some plants this fall and then bust a move. Want to get some with us?
Shannon is right. Asparagus resents being moved and that is why I haven't started my official asparagus patch yet. If I build one, I want to leave it there for the next 20 year. It is taking a while to figure out the best spot but I should know by next spring.
Side note: I recall hearing on the radio that asparagus loves to grow in horse manure.
Awe! But it's such a cute little guy, Shannon!
It's not too late to start a patch? I was under the impression that asparagus had to be started very early in the spring, though I don't really remember where I got that...
I'd be interested to know who sells crowns (I think that's what they're called) locally. I think I've only seen them at Southern States.
I got my crowns at Southern States. I may have seen the fern at Dutch Plant Farm.
