Farmers’ Market = Good Cause
Each month during the season, Cakes for Cause chooses another local community agency and we donate 10% of our farmers’ market proceeds for the week to them. This Saturday (the 5th) we’ll be donating proceeds to the YMCA of Frederick County to help support their scholarship/campership program. We started out this life as camp counselors…YMCA camp counselors to be exact and we remember how much fun the kiddos had every year (who are we kidding...YMCA camp ROCKS!). Every family in our community can’t give their children that experience so we’d like to support the great programming offered in our cool North End neighborhood. Anyone up to match our portion of the donation???
Cakes for Cause + Baltimore Orioles???
After some good-natured teasing on Facebook about our Executive Director throwing like a girl (ummmmm, she is a girl!), we’re off to a good start for the All Stars Among Us competition from People Magazine. We were nominated to represent the Baltimore Orioles and your vote (multiple votes people…put an intern on it!) will help us bring more exposure to the difficulties that foster care youth face when they don’t have a program like ours. Our program at Moxie gives them 6 months of steady job experience, helps them develop critical life skills, and puts them on a path to successful adulthood. It also puts a new generation of young people out there who take pride in their skills and who love food almost as much as we do. There are too many young people out there who do not have the kinds of positive lasting relationships with adults who can help them transition into adulthood. If you’re a “fan” of what we do in this community and what we would like to do in other communities, please vote for us. Thank you.
The Mission of Cakes for Cause is to empower vulnerable youth and develop social enterprises that engage the community in cultivating meaningful employment and educational opportunities to teach work and life skills. Speaking Of the Farmers’ Market…Have you been yet? Did you pick up some of our seasonal berry shortcake biscuits and pair it either with strawberries or rhubarb or both??? We also carry breads at the farmers’ market every week. Every loaf is vegan, two are whole wheat, and they’re all yummy for sandwiches, French toast or just al fresco with a salad or a steak. Cakes for Cause: Brrrr...It's Starting To Feel Like Winter!
And not just because we’re at the North End of Frederick either…the weather forecast is for cold and frosty temperatures but at Cakes for Cause and Moxie Bakery & Café we feel like it’s the deep south. And our brunch plate this week reflects it…this Sunday, line up for shrimp and grits (or vegan grits with roasted veggies and tofu) at breakfast time. Pair it with a freshly-baked cinny roll or an all-butter croissant and transport yourself to the French Quarter for the day. We’ve made a little adjustment to our hours but you probably won’t notice the difference (unless you’re that lone 6:00 am coffee person…just knock, we’ll let you in!) so pull up a chair and linger with us a little bit this weekend.

Shout out to DailyCandy!
Those of you who troll the internet regularly are probably familiar with this site but if you’re not, Cakes for Cause got some great press this week and we want to give a little shout of welcome to all our new friends and supporters. We like to keep it lighthearted here at Cakes for Cause so no fighting over the last box of gingerbread ok?
The North Pole Has Nothing On the North End!
And we’ve got everything you need to make the holidays special this year. Need some ideas? Give us a call or drop by to check out our holiday order list and see what we’ll have on a regular basis. Need something extra special? We’re booking fast so we need at least one week’s notice. Having a holiday party but don’t want to clean your own house? You can rent our elegant and eclectic café space or the large event space at the Bernard W. Brown Community Center. Whatever you’re looking for, why not celebrate the holidays with Moxie (we know you’ve got it)!
The Gingie Cookies Will Be Here Next Week!
Starting December 10th and continuing through the holidays, our gingerbread and sugar cookie folk fly in from the North Pole (or Gaithersburg’s L’Academie de Cuisine as it happens) all rolled and cut out and ready for you to bake. It’s a great way to keep kids and adults alike occupied through the winter holidays. Two dozen cookies that you slide into the oven and bake yourself…we’ll throw in a frosting kit and some decorating templates for ideas as well. And the best part is…we’ll never tell that you didn’t make them! Reserve now and buy early because when they’re gone, they’re gone…until next year!
The Swag Is Here Now!
You know you’ve been waiting and it’s here right now (well the shirts will be here next week), Moxie t-shirts and gift cards. Let us know your size for our pre-sale special (until we actually have our hands on the shirts) of $15 before they’re delivered. And don’t forget that if you also reserve one of our fast-dwindling supply of Cakes for Cause baseball shirts, you can have one of those for $12 when you purchase a hot Moxie shirt.

Cakes for Cause: You Don't Want to Miss This!
It's the week of Thanksgiving and Cakes for Cause knows that you have a house full of hungry family members and who wants to cook all day anyhow? We do! Let us make your day after Thanksgiving special with a yummy breakfast before you hit beautiful downtown Frederick. Does Grandpa like biscuits? We've got them hot from the oven with jam and butter. Does Cousin Eddie love all things French? How about one of our delicate all-butter croissants? And coffee, we've got lots and lots of strong hot coffee to keep you going for the whole morning. We'll be open for breakfast, lunch and sweet treats all weekend so stop by and visit us. Don't forget our "creative" brunch on Sundays...we bring together a whole plate of goodness for you to enjoy along with all our regular breakfast items. If you're a vegan, don't worry, we make you your own version too.
When Are We Open…When Are We Closed?
At Cakes for Cause, we value our staff and their family time so we offer them several holidays each year. That way, they stay rested and enthusiastic (because we all work like crazy the rest of the time). Our holiday schedule is the following:
Thanksgiving Day (Thursday) CLOSED
(except for pre-ordered pick-ups and pastry emergencies 8-12)
We wish you and your families the happiest of Thanksgivings!
Christmas Eve (Thursday) CLOSED
Christmas Day (Friday) CLOSED
New Years Day (Friday) CLOSED
Gingerbread Cookies Anyone?
Those of you who know Cakes for Cause have been asking about the gingerbread cookies and yes, they are coming back in 2009 to make your holidays easier. For those of you who don’t know, we make your holiday baking a snap with our frozen gingerbread and sugar cookies. All you have to do is pop them into the oven, bake them, and then decorate them with our handy frosting kit. This year it’s all part of the same package…2 dozen gingerbread or sugar cookies, a frosting kit, lots of templates with ideas for decorating and plenty of fun for the whole family. Plus, there’s no mess from the eggs, flour, and butter! You’ll be able to pay online and pick up after December 10th. More info to come.
The Swag Is Coming…The Swag Is Coming!
Yes, you have asked and we are responding…with Moxie t-shirts and gift cards. These are the must-have seasonal gifts in Frederick. Get your own little piece of the funky North End and pre-order our hot t-shirts or our even hotter gift cards. Call 301-620-0003 to reserve yours today. And, to make gift giving even easier, we’re offering a special pre-order price of $15 and if you want to add on one of our Cakes for Cause baseball tees, we’ll throw it in for only $12 (while supplies last). It’s a great big holiday extravaganza here at Cakes for Cause! Here’s a peek at the Moxie design (black/grey or pink/brown)…you know you want one!

Cakes for Cause at the Farmer's Market
Farmer’s Market Update
Sob…this is the last week for the Shab Row Farmer’s Market! We know they’re planning lots of fun stuff for Halloween (there’s rumors of costumes) to celebrate the last market of the season for downtown Frederick. Also, for Cakes for Cause, after much reflection we have decided to stop attending the West Frederick Market for the remainder of the season. This Saturday will be our last Saturday for the year. It’s for a lot of reasons but mostly it’s because we will have youth starting in the program in a few short weeks and our café is their classroom. So, it’s in their best interest that we focus our efforts on the operations of the café and bakery. It isn’t you, it’s us and we’ll miss you. Please plan to stop by our booth this weekend so we can share our excitement about this new stage in our non-profit. Our farmer’s market customers are the earliest supporters of our program and we wouldn’t be in such a good place without their enthusiasm and support…thank you so much. We’ll see you next season!
What’s for Dinner?
We think it’s that people don’t realize that we offer savory items all day…or perhaps it’s the construction, or all the rain. Whatever it is, our evenings are sometimes slower than our lunchtime. Moxie Bakery & Café is open until 8:00 Tuesday-Thursday and until 9:00 on Friday and it’s a low key place to eat a light supper and dessert before heading out for the evening or before you head home. In the evenings, we offer soup and salads, small savory plates and the sweetest treats on the north end of Frederick. Why not stop in for a little Moxie in the evening.
What’s for Brunch?
This week at Moxie Bakery & Café we’ll have a breakfast strata for our brunch plate. It’s a kind of savory bread pudding and it’s absolutely delicious. As you know our focus on Sundays is to offer all our regular pastry and breakfast items and to craft a yummy brunch plate. We don’t like to forget our vegan and vegetarian friends either so we have a special brunch plate for you as well…perhaps some roasted vegetables with your own breakfast plate? We hope you can join us for breakfast, lunch, supper, coffee or brunch one of these days!

Cakes for Cause: Wow...
We'll say it again, wow…
What a two weeks it’s been for Cakes for Cause and we haven’t even kept you posted with an email! Hopefully you’ve kept up through Facebook, Twitter, or even by coming into the café during our grand opening week. We’re sorry we’ve been out of touch but we hope you’ve at least driven by the café and peeked in the windows. We’re still adjusting our hours and we’ll keep you posted here and with signs on the doors.
Moxie Bakery & Café is now open on North Market Street. We had a wonderful first day (standing room only) and a busy week following it and we’re starting to get into a groove. If we’ve missed your phone calls and emails, please forgive us…we’re going to try to catch up. It’s all part of the preparation as we gear up to welcome youth into the program and offer employment and life skills training over a six-month period.
We hope you’ll visit us in the café, perhaps on Sunday during our “creative” brunch. This week, in addition to our regular offerings of breakfast options, our brunch plate will be a baked sourdough french toast with a blend of fresh local orchard apples from Scenic View Orchard and yummy maple syrup. We’ll pair it with kofte, a delicious spiced lamb sausage from Whitmore Farms or with a pork sausage. Brunch is served until 3:00 pm or until the food runs out!

We will also continue to be at the farmers’ markets until they close at the end of this month and next month. We’ll provide our usual offerings but we’re still getting used to a new production schedule that includes three meals a day so be patient with us if we’ve missed something.

Cakes for Cause: Our Focaccia Has Run Amok
Yes, because we forgot all about our email last week we are being punished by our breads. However, it’s a good thing for you this week…we have gargantuan focaccia so if you’re looking for a unique sandwich bread or would like to sit around in your living room and dip bread into olive oil, we have the loaves for you at the Farmer’s Markets this week. Of course, we’re experimenting with our new ovens and are pretty excited at how great they work so we have lots of our other great products too. It’s also a bonus week since we’ll be selling outside the new café on Saturday for In the Street. Did you ever wonder why no one sells breakfast at Frederick’s largest festival of the year? Well, this year we’ve got it covered with scones, cookies, coffee, lemonade and iced tea (and the infamous Arnold Palmer). Three venues and lots of opportunity to support Cakes for Cause:
Thursdays 3-6 on East Street at Church Street
West Frederick
Saturdays 10-1 on Baughman’s Lane behind the Quality Inn on Route 40 in Frederick
In the Street
Saturday 9-5 (or until the food runs out)
Moxie Bakery & Café, 629 North Market Street (next to the fountain)
October 17th is Just Around the Corner
We know we have two weeks and 1.5 days left until our grand opening but do you have your calendar marked for our big day? We’ll throw open our doors and welcome you into the space that we’ve been waiting for for the past year and a half. She looks beautiful, we’ve taken her out on a couple of test runs already and we’re ready to be a part of the vibrant North End Community every day (we think). Set your alarm clocks early for the ribbon cutting and the rush for the door. If you bring out your lawn chairs and camp out, we’ll hook you up with coffee and cocoa whenever you get there. We’ll have specials and drawings all day and we hope you’ll join us.
Knitty McKnitten...
Do you like to knit? Are you obsessed with yarn? This week might be your week at the West Frederick Farmer's market with a Wool to Yarn - Spinning Demo. One of our own vendors, Rose of Whitmore Farm and her friends will be spinning wool fleece into yarn using spinning wheels and drop spindles. You will get to see the art of spinning and learn how the fleece of a sheep or other fiber animal is transformed into yarn to knit, crochet and felt. Some of their creations and crafts will also be available for purchase. The rain date is October 10th. It's very zen and appropriate for fall crafts!

Cakes for Cause: Woo Hoo!
So, we’re sitting here with the doors open to catch the early morning breeze, drinking coffee (made in our own coffee machine), at tables and chairs that we just put together (the place smells like a combination of wood, varnish and rubber!-), wondering how to replace our fancy compact fluorescent bulbs, and contemplating our grand opening. What’s that you say? A grand opening date??? Yes folks, it’s finally here and we can say with a 99.5% level of confidence that we have set the date for the grand opening of Moxie. Tell me, tell me, tell me (we imagine you yelling…perhaps only in your head since you’re at the office)! Okay then, Cakes for Cause will be opening our social enterprise Moxie Bakery & Café, on Saturday October 17th at 9:00 am. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell everyone you meet on the street, put a banner on your house (we’ve spent a lot of money in the last few weeks so we want this to be a BIG day)…whatever you do, please make time in your day to visit us at the café for a cup of java, one of our delightful pastries, some soup, or dessert. Sit at one of our indoor or outdoor tables, enjoy the fountain at 7th and Market Street, line up outside our door starting at 5:00 am (we hope) but make sure you don’t miss it.

But Don’t Forget the Farmers’ Markets!
We’re still there and some of you are still there but ALL of you are not there. There’s tons of local produce still available this time of year…squash for soup and roasting, kale to sauté (have you ever tried it on pizza?), onions and potatoes for stews, fresh and local meats, and your favorite comfort breads, croutons, and biscuits to partner with your fall meals. Whether you get inspired when you visit the market or call us in advance, Cakes for Cause has some delicious products when the cooler weather hits so make the farmers market part of your Thursday or Saturday routine.

Swag, Swag, Not Enough Swag
Alrighty, the weather is starting to cool off so the ¾ sleeve baseball shirts are looking pretty good right now (we know, we should have done a sleeveless for the summertime). We still have a few left in adult and children’s sizes. Remember, if you’ve purchased any of our other t-shirts it’s only $18 for you!

Cakes for Cause: What’s Better on a Rainy Thursday?
Cakes for Cause that’s what! We’ll be at the Shab Row market today and there’s some special treats in store for everyone. We’ve heard a rumor of some craft activities where kids can make animals out of vegetables...now we don’t really know what that’s going to be like but it sure sounds interesting! Come out and join us today or on Saturday at the West Frederick Farmers’ Market for the best in seasonal produce and plants, delicious baked goods, hot coffee and cold tea. Cakes for Cause can sweeten the deal even further and offer you the opportunity to volunteer at our booth in Frederick or at Shab Row. You’ll get to choose a pastry for your very own and learn how to shake the perfect lemonade…it’s not an opportunity to miss!

IT’S MOVING DAY
Yes, you heard that right, we’re getting keys this week and we’re moving tons of furniture and fixtures into Moxie Bakery & Café, the home of our social enterprise classroom. We have to assemble chairs, unpack china, and generally find a home for all the cool stuff we’ve collected over the past year. Your mission…if you choose to accept it…is to be a part of the excitement for just a few short hours on Saturday or Sunday. We’re trying to keep things manageable and we’ve only got 10 slots on each day so if you’re really excited you can sign up to volunteer for both days but save some room for others. We’ll feed you beverages and lunch and you can be the first people to see the space as it comes together. Thanks for your help.
We Never Like To Do This, But…
We like to remind you every once in a while that Cakes for Cause is a non-profit and there are several ways you can support us. We’ve been waiting for a year and a half for our café to open and serve its purpose, not only as a training program for youth, but also as a source of revenue that supports the mission of our organization. We’re pretty conservative with our cash and we’ve gotten a lot of bang for our buck so far but there’s lots of little bits of equipment and supplies that we will be providing to the youth in our program and you can help with that…by visiting us at one of the farmers’ markets and purchasing our products (hopefully you think they’re delicious), by sponsoring a chair in our café, or by making a direct tax-deductible donation to our organization. We’re in the final stretch right now and we wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for people like you…so thank you for everything.
Twitter Alert
Did you know that Cakes for Cause is on Twitter and Facebook? We just realized that people actually responded to us on Twitter so it’s probably going to be a lot more useful to us in the future!-)

Cakes for Cause: Coming Soon…Moxie Bakery & Cafe
Do us a favor and walk up North Market Street to the fountain at 7th Street…they’re installing awnings today on what we hope is your new favorite uptown gathering spot. Moxie is the social enterprise operated by Cakes for Cause and it’s the classroom space where we will provide six months of paid employment and experience in the restaurant industry to youth in our program. We’re so excited! Thanks to the many of you who responded to our email last week with offers to help…we’ll keep you posted on when we’re going to need work crews.
Calling All Pastry Lovers!
The response to our products at the Shab Row market has been fabulous…thanks to all who come out to that market on Thursdays to support us. And to those of you who make it to both our farmers’ markets (because you just can’t resist we suppose!), we’ll have some unique treats this week. Have you ever had a madeleine? It’s a little butter cake, shaped like a shell and dusted with powdered sugar and it’s absolutely delicious with your morning coffee or afternoon tea. We’ll also be experimenting with a gluten free product this week…try and see if you can guess which one it is. We hope to see you there!

Saturdays 10-1 on Baughman’s Lane behind the Quality Inn on Route 40 in Frederick
Our Volunteers Are the Bestest!
We hope that we appreciate you all throughout the year but we do try to make sure to do a public shout out regularly to our volunteers. Cakes for Cause would not be the organization that it is without our loyal group of volunteers. Some of you help us out at the farmers’ markets, some of you help us with one-time projects, others serve on the board of directors for up to two years, and all your time and efforts are appreciated. We do need to give a special shout out to our good friend Yeon. For those of you who visit us at the market, you know that our Saturday booth always has fresh flowers and some of you have even tried to buy them from us. One of our volunteers has committed for the past two years to provide those every week from her garden and they’re just beautiful. So to Yeon and to all of our volunteers, we honor your efforts this week and every week at Cakes for Cause.
Cookie Tourist Deadline is this Sunday…
If you have pictures you took of your cookie tourist on vacation, we’ll give you until August 31st to get them to us to be judged by an impartial panel and chosen as our winner (fabulous prizes people!). You can email your photos (no bribes please) to info@cakesforcause.org, and you may enter more than one photograph from your cookie’s travels.

Cakes for Cause: It's Really Hot This Week!
Wow, that’s not really a subject line but it’s really hot isn’t it? How about some ice cold lemonade to cool you down? Cakes for Cause shakes your lemonades by hand and they’re perfect with one of our yummy cookies or scones. This week, we’ll also have whole wheat and sourdough small loaves, focaccia, our ever-popular jalousie, and many more variations on deliciousness. Pull up one of our chairs at our farmer’s market lounge and sit for a moment. Enjoy yourself!
Thursdays 3-6 on East Street at Church Street

Saturdays 10-1 on Baughman’s Lane behind the Motel 6 on Route 40 in Frederick
As If You Need Coffee…
Did we mention that it’s hot this week? Anyhow, we do carry Dublin Roasters Coffee at both farmers’ markets and we can attest to the fact that these locally roasted beans are delicious as an iced coffee or a coffee smoothie if you’re so inclined.
Calling All Tourists…
You thought we forgot about our own contest didn’t you? It wouldn’t be entirely surprising what with our minds filled up with ovens, refrigerators and mixers in our new bakery/café but we actually didn’t forget our little traveling cookie tourists. So, if you have pictures you took on vacation, we’ll give you until August 31st to get them to us to be judged by an impartial panel and chosen as our winner (fabulous prizes people!). You can email your photos (no bribes please) to info@cakesforcause.org, and you may enter more than one photograph from your cookie’s travels.
Speaking of the Café…
Many of you ask when we’ll open and we think it’s pretty close at this point. Once the building is finished and ready for occupancy, we hope to be open for business approximately 4-5 weeks after that. We’ll be needing helpers with a variety of things during those weeks (assembling chairs and tables, painting, unpacking dishes very carefully) and continuing at the farmers markets so if you’re up for it, let us know. Once we’re open, we’ll still want to see you so make sure you make time in your day to join us for breakfast, lunch or dessert!

Cakes for Cause: Did You Miss Us?
We’re tired of paperwork and want to spend some quality time with some cookies so hit us at the Farmer’s markets for some treats this week. We’ve got some yummy looking whole-wheat sandwich bread and sourdough, as well as delicious sweet stuff for you to nibble on.
Saturdays 10-1 on Baughman’s Lane behind the Motel 6 on Route 40 in Frederick
It’s Not You…It’s Us
If you went to the Middletown Market yesterday, you know that it was our last week there and if you went to Shab Row, you were probably surprised to see us. We’ve had to make a very tough decision and give up our market booth in Middletown. Our customers there are amazing and very supportive, but there just aren’t enough of them. As you know, all proceeds from the sales of our baked goods go to support our non-profit mission to provide vocational training for at-risk youth. It’s taken a tremendous amount of time and resources to support this market on a weekly basis so after a lot of thought, we decided that we needed to focus our efforts in other directions. Strangely, right after we made that decision, we were invited to participate in the Thursday market at Shab Row so we’ll be there until the end of the season. Thank you to everyone in Middletown for making Thursdays such an awesome market venue…we’ll miss you.
Volunteer Opportunities
We still need volunteers to help us finish the season in Frederick. If you’d like to help, you can link to our volunteer calendar. Our Saturday volunteers generously give up their mornings to sell lemonade and scones with us. It’s a great excuse for you to go to the farmer’s market and get the best of local produce and products.
Shout Out to Senior
This week is senior citizen appreciation week at the West Frederick Market so we are offering half price cookies (while they last) to senior citizens. Now, just so we don’t get slapped upside the head for being sassy, we’re going to count on you to let us know if you qualify for this discount…to us, you all look like you’re twenty years old!
Pull Up a Chair
If you’ve put your noseprints on our windows at 629 North Market Street, you can see the progress we’re making. Once we have keys in our hot little hands, we move in and assemble furniture and then not long after that, you can get Cakes for Cause every day except Mondays. Why not enjoy our social enterprise, Moxie Bakery & Café, knowing that you have a little piece of history? By sponsoring a chair or table in the café, you help us support at-risk youth in the Frederick community and ensure that everyone has a seat at the table. They’re going fast so let us know if we can reserve one for you…each chair includes a plaque with your name or your organization’s name and a quote about what it means to have moxie…and we know you’ve got it!

Cakes for Cause: We Have A MOTHER!!!!
Yes, we were successful last week at Cakes for Cause and we are noshing on a lovely, chewy, delicious sourdough loaf this morning. You too will be able to experience this yumminess every week now (we have a lot of mother!) at the Farmer’s Markets. As you know, Cakes for Cause is not a bread bakery (and won’t be even when we open the storefront) but we’ll have limited quantities in Middletown and West Frederick every week. If you got a chance to sample the potato rosemary loaf last week, we’ll be making that one as dinner rolls this week. Get there early!

This Saturday is a special one because on the first Saturday of every month, Cakes for Cause highlights another non-profit in the area and we donate 5% of our Farmer’s Market proceeds to them. On August 1st, 5% of our proceeds will go to benefit Hope Alive. Hope Alive, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering transitional housing and support services for homeless women and their children in Frederick County. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook, too! They have an anonymous donor that will match up to $100 of anything we help them raise so come on out, have our friendly volunteers help you stock up on baked goods and make a double difference for two community organizations in Frederick.
Speaking of Baked Goods…
Well, not really baked goods but equally yummy last week was our Arnold Palmer. Half lemonade and half iced tea = totally refreshing! It’s supposed to be hot, hot, hot this week so let our lemonade-istas shake it up for you. Holler, “I’d like an ARNOLD!” when you get to the front of the line and we’ll know what you mean.
**Important Calendar Note**
Next week, both our farmer’s market booths will be closed. We typically close for a week every August and January. Our staff has already taken vacation this year but you know what? We’re opening a bakery in less than TWO MONTHS!!!!!!! And we realized that we have a lot of administrative stuff that needs doing so we’re taking a week off from the baking (no full-scale panic please) to try and get it all done. Please don’t hold it against us…we’ll be back in Middletown on the 13th of August and in West Frederick on the 15th of August. Who knows, it might be possible to actually catch us at our offices next week! We’ll still send out an email to remind you and please read it because it will also have some special information on how to put your own personal stamp on the café when we open our doors.

Cakes for Cause: Because Some Of Us Watch Too Many Horror Movies…
We got ourselves on a theme this week and we just couldn’t stop…that’s just how we roll sometimes. Check out Cakes for Cause at one of our weekly farmer’s markets on Thursday or Saturday and slap us upside the head to make it stop!
Thursdays 3-6 on Old Route 40 and Route 17 in Middletown
West Frederick Farmer’s Market
Saturdays 10-1 on Baughman’s Lane behind Motel 6 on Route 40 in Frederick
Cool, Frosty Iced Tea (& Arsenic? Just kidding!)
In the horror theme of this week’s email, we will NOT have arsenic in our tea. But we will make it tasty and fresh-brewed. If you smile and say please, maybe we’ll make you an Arnold Palmer (half tea, half lemonade).
Become a stalker tonight!
Go ahead and take a walk tonight after dinner and peer in the windows at 629 North Market Street. Our new home will open (hopefully) by the end of September. The builders took the fence down, so it’s legal to rub your noses on the windows now! The café is coming right along and you should keep a look out for new equipment and black & white, checkered floors in the kitchen.
Keeping you on the edge of your seat…
We have a way for you to have your own little piece of our social enterprise Moxie Bakery & Cafe. Tune in next week for the thrilling preview!
The Mission of Cakes for Cause is to empower vulnerable youth and develop social enterprises that engage the community in cultivating meaningful employment and educational opportunities to teach work and life skills. In Frederick, Cakes for Cause will open a bakery/café in mid-August that trains youth in the hospitality industry.

Cakes for Cause Update
Well, really we're just running behind this week and we apologize. We know that you look forward to your Cakes for Cause email each week almost as much as we enjoy writing it. So here it is, a little late but still in your inbox...enjoy!
Because we like the French…
Or at least we like what the French eat! We’re introducing yet another fun-to-say treat: Palmiers! (say it all together now, “palm-ee-aye”) We’ve now broadened your horizons to TWO French words (Jalousie, anyone?). And they taste good, too. This puff pastry, cardamom-sugared cookie is melt-in-your-mouth delicious (perfect with a cup of coffee)! Stop by all three locations this week to taste them for yourself.
Tis the season…
For ice cream sandwiches! And our chocolate chocolate chip cookies work fabulously for making your very own. Just take two of our cookies, a slightly soft scoop of your favorite ice cream (Mint chocolate chip? Cappuccino? Vanilla bean?), gently squish ‘em all together and get your very own homemade ice cream sandwich (after re-freezing them for a bit). We know it works because we’ve tried it ourselves (and shared it with some happy friends). So come buy chocolate chocolate chip cookies in even numbers at all the markets this week.
Since we’ve been easy on you…
We’re now bringing it to you with some t-shirt harassment! Do you have the latest Cakes for Cause shirt? If not, then you’re a slacker. Not really, but we’ve had our newest edition out for a couple of months and you'd better hurry—we only print a certain number so when they’re gone, they’re gone. Because they’re a baseball-style shirt you can also say you’re on our team (but not if you don’t have the gear) and what team isn’t a winner that provides lemonade and cookies at every event? They're available at every market we attend.
Do you know where the barn is?
If not, then you’re missing out. Join us this Friday morning beginning at 8:30 at the Chartreuse & Co. tag sale. We’ll be there with all kinds of breakfast treats to fuel your shopping. And if you’re like us, you’ll still be wandering the grounds looking for amazing deals in the afternoon and will need re-energizing with lemonade and a cookie. Chartreuse is a barn fully stocked with cool things! You will find vintage and modern hip home goods: ranging from new Victorian dressers to old farm benches, to chic accessories. Check out their website for more info.

Cakes for Cause: Can’t Beat Chocolate and Hazelnut
Croissants get crazy (and more delicious)!
So, we found ourselves with some extra croissant dough this weekend (don’t ask how that happens) and happened to have some chocolate hazelnut spread…you know, the stuff you shouldn’t really eat on toast but you do anyway. Well, we rolled it up into our newest Danish shape and baked it off and…you have no idea what’s in store for you this weekend! It’s the 4th of July weekend and with two markets in one week, it’s a double billing for Cakes for Cause products. In Middletown, we’ll bring an array of delicious cookies, cheddar biscuits, and some new breads we’re experimenting with. Frederick’s market will have our usual wide selection of scones and cookies, croissants, breads, and the aforementioned jalousie (the new Danish). Jalousie are named for the architectural element…the jalousie window. It’s a long, thin pastry filled with goodness peeking out from behind our yummy all-butter croissant. If you missed it last week filled with apricot preserves, you definitely don’t want to miss it this week filled with chocolate hazelnut cream!
Middletown Farmer’s Market
Thursdays 3-6 on Old Route 40 and Route 17 in Middletown
West Frederick Farmer’s Market
Saturdays 10-1:00 on Baughman’s Lane behind the Motel 6 on Route 40 in Frederick
Both of these markets are producers-only markets and bring the best in local produce to your community. Your support of Cakes for Cause at these markets helps us to develop our quality programs for youth who have aged out of the foster care system. We hope we’ll see you there!
Help Us Make a Difference
This is our third month to donate a portion of our proceeds to another local non-profit. It’s been a challenging summer for many smaller community service organizations so each month on the first Saturday, Cakes for Cause donates 5% of our total proceeds to another organization that provides human services in our community. On July 4th we will donate a portion of our proceeds to CALM, The Frederick Community Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center. CALM is a non-profit community service organization that provides affordable and accessible conflict resolution services to Frederick residents. CALM encourages peaceful resolution of conflicts through the use of mediation. They offer mediation in the following areas: business, community, and all family issues including parent/teen, divorce, eldercare, and school. CALM also offers facilitation, community conferencing, trainings, and presentations.
Need a Little Buzz?
We keep forgetting to remind you that we’re now carrying Dublin Roasters Coffees at the Farmer’s Markets. If you haven’t tried some of their blends, you’re definitely missing out. Dublin Roasters Coffee is a women-owned, local roaster and we get a contact buzz just by opening up the display box. We carry several varieties so if you’re in need of your own coffee high, stop by our booth and pick up either a half or full pound of deliciousness!

Cakes for Cause: Sugar Cookie Tourist Livin' the Good Life.
SUGAR COOKIE TOURIST LIVIN’ THE GOOD LIFE
The sugar-cookie-tourist contest is really heating up! One of our cookie friends vacationed in Mexico last week and, from the looks of it, had the time of his life! Pictures show him lounging on the beach with a drink in hand, floating in the pool (in a protective Tupperware, of course!) and, finally, making friends with an iguana, who turned on him in the end! He had a good run in Cancun-- this one is going to be hard to top!
MIDDLETOWN FARMER’S MARKET
The Cakes for Cause stand was ready for action last Thursday at the Middletown Farmer’s Market. Unfortunately, we were not overrun by stampeding hordes of addicted Cakes customers! We need all you die-hard fans to come out and show your support!! We’d hate for you to go into a sugar coma, though, so use those networking skills and forward this email or tell your coworkers/friends/family/anyone you see…. to get their butts to Middletown!! Our program director has become very attached to this market and can’t bear to give it up, so help her make it worth it! The Middletown Farmer’s Market is located in Middletown on 12 S. Church Street (Rt. 17 South, off of Alt. 40) from 3:00 - 6:00 pm.
VOLUNTEERING WITH CAKES FOR CAUSE
The Cakes for Cause Farmer’s Market booths are staffed by volunteers. If you are interested in helping out and getting involved in the community, we would love to have you! It is a great way to meet new people and spread the word about Cakes for Cause (each pastry bought helps youth who have aged out of foster care gain real job skills). You can sign up to help at our volunteer calendar.
